Description
The Yemeni rial is the official currency of Yemen, issued by the Central Bank of Yemen. It is subdivided into 100 fils, although due to inflation the fils is no longer used in everyday transactions. The rial is denoted by the Arabic sign ﷼ and locally called "الريال اليمني".
Since the outbreak of civil conflict in 2015, the rial has experienced severe devaluation and multiple parallel exchange rates, leading many businesses and individuals to rely on the US dollar for larger transactions. The currency’s volatility, combined with limited foreign exchange availability, has made it a focal point of Yemen’s economic challenges.
