Description
The Turkmen manat is the official currency of Turkmenistan, introduced in 1993 following the country's independence from the Soviet Union. It replaced the Soviet ruble and underwent a major redenomination in 2009, when one new manat was set equal to 5,000 old manats to curb inflation.
Issued by the Central Bank of Turkmenistan, the manat is subdivided into 100 tenge. Banknotes feature national symbols such as the Akhal‑Teke horse and historic monuments, while coins display the Turkmen coat of arms. The currency circulates throughout Turkmenistan, where Turkmen is the primary language and Russian is also widely spoken.
