Description
The Tajikistani somoni is the official currency of Tajikistan, a landlocked nation in Central Asia. Introduced in 2000 to replace the Tajikistani ruble, the somoni is named after the historic Persian ruler Ismail Samani (Samanid). It is subdivided into 100 dirams, though dirams are rarely used in everyday transactions.
The currency is issued by the National Bank of Tajikistan and carries the symbol SM. Banknotes feature prominent national figures, cultural motifs, and landmarks such as the Pamir Mountains. While the economy is largely cash‑based, the somoni has seen gradual stabilization since its introduction, supported by reforms and foreign remittances.
