Description

The Moldovan leu is the official currency of the Republic of Moldova, issued by the National Bank of Moldova. Introduced in 1993 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it replaced the temporary coupon currency and the Soviet ruble at a rate of 1 leu = 1,000 rubles. The leu is subdivided into 100 bani and is symbolized by the letter “L” (sometimes written as “lei”).

Although closely linked to the Romanian leu historically, the Moldovan leu has been independent since 1999 and is currently managed as a floating currency, with occasional interventions to maintain stability. The currency’s name is derived from the Romanian word for “lion,” and its plural form “lei” can cause confusion for visitors. Moldova’s official language is Romanian, and Russian, Gagauz, and Ukrainian are also widely spoken.
