Description
The Moroccan Dirham is the official currency of Morocco, introduced in 1960 to replace the former Moroccan franc. Issued by the central bank, Bank Al‑Maghrib, it is divided into 100 centimes and circulates throughout the Kingdom of Morocco as well as the disputed Western Sahara region.
It is pegged to a basket of foreign currencies, primarily the euro, within a narrow band, which helps stabilise its value. Coins and banknotes bear inscriptions in Arabic and French, and the common symbol used domestically is د.م. The name “dirham” traces back to the historic silver coin used across the Islamic world, reflecting Morocco’s long‑standing trade heritage.
