Description
The Libyan dinar is the official currency of Libya, issued by the Central Bank of Libya. Introduced in 1971 to replace the Libyan pound, it is subdivided into 1,000 dirhams and is denoted by the symbol ل.د.
Historically, the dinar was pegged to the Special Drawing Rights and later to a basket of major currencies, helping to maintain relative stability despite periods of political turbulence. It is one of the highest‑valued unit currencies in Africa, and its banknotes feature prominent national symbols such as the Great Man‑Made River and historic sites.
