Description
The Ethiopian birr is the official currency of Ethiopia, issued by the National Bank of Ethiopia. It is subdivided into 100 santim, although the santim is no longer in circulation, and the primary unit is the birr, symbolized as Br.
Introduced in 1945 to replace the Ethiopian dollar, the birr has undergone several redenominations, the most recent in 2005 when 1 new birr equaled 10,000 old birr to curb hyperinflation. Ethiopia’s largely cash‑based economy, its large agricultural sector, and ongoing reforms influence the birr’s exchange rate and liquidity.
